The midtarsal joint is composed of the calcaneocuboid joint on the lateral side and the talonavicular joint on the medial side. It is a complex joint which produces inversion, eversion, abduction, adduction, dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. To test the motion available at this joint, grasp the calcaneus medially with one hand and with the other hand, grasp the forefoot with the outside border of your hand resting over the cuboid, adjacent to the calcaneocuboid joint and extending your fingers over the foot in the region of the talonavicular joint. Then, move the forefoot through its full range of motion in each direction keeping the rear foot stationary.
