Tibialis anterior
The tibialis anterior muscle is located in the anterior compartment of the leg. It originates from the lateral tibial condyle and lateral tibial shaft and its powerful tendon inserts into the medial and plantar surfaces of the medial cuneiform and 1st metatarsal base. The muscle is best identified by asking your subject to dorsiflex and invert their foot against resistance. In this position, the tendon should become prominent over the anterior ankle and its insertion point will be easily identifiable. The muscle belly will also be simpler to perceive when contracted.
