Common peroneal nerve at neck of fibula
The common peroneal nerve maybe palpated at the neck of the fibula by running your index finger from medial to lateral over the neck of the fibula. Relatively firm pressure will need to be applied to identify this nerve. Note before dividing into its terminal branches, the common peroneal nerve gives rise to the sural communicating nerve within the popliteal fossa. The sural communicating nerve unites with the medial sural cutaneous nerve to form the sural nerve.
