Deep peroneal nerve

From its origin deep to peroneus longus, the deep peroneal nerve descends anteriorly and inferiorly, piercing the intermuscular septum to enter the anterior compartment of the leg. Once in the anterior compartment, the nerve passes along the interosseous membrane, deep to the muscles of the anterior leg. It passes beneath the extensor retinaculum to enter the dorsum of the foot, where it gives rise to two terminal branches. The medial branch supplies the skin of the first and second toes and the lateral terminal branch supplies innervation to the extensor digitorum brevis muscle.
