Medial and lateral plantar nerves

The tibial nerve terminates by dividing into the medial and lateral plantar arteries deep to the flexor retinaculum. The medial plantar nerve courses deep to abductor hallucis alongside the lateral aspect of the medial plantar artery. It terminates by giving rise to the first plantar digital proper nerve as well as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd common plantar digital nerves. The lateral plantar nerve courses alongside the lateral plantar artery, between flexor digitorum brevis and quadratus plantae before giving rise to the fourth common plantar digital nerve and the 10th plantar digital nerve proper. Branches of the lateral plantar nerve also innervate adductor hallucis, the interossei and the lumbricals.
