Medial malleolus

The medial malleolus is an easily identifiable structure located just proximal to the head of the talus. The anterior, posterior and inferior borders of the medial malleolus may be isolated through palpation. The inferior border of the medial malleolus is comprised of two tubercles (the anterior and posterior colliculi) separated by a depression known as the intercollicular groove. These colliculi provide the attachment points for the deep and superficial components of the deltoid ligament complex. Note that the tibialis posterior and flexor digitorum longus tendons pass across the posterior border of the medial malleolus. The tibialis posterior tendon passes along the medial malleolar groove during its passage and the flexor digitorum longus tendon runs posterior to this.
