Medial neck of talus

The medial portion of the head and neck of the talus is located immediately proximal to the navicular. The medial aspect of the head and neck of the talus is more difficult to identify than the lateral aspect, but may be examined using several different techniques. The first is to invert and evert the forefoot and observe the resulting motion between the talus and the navicular. Note that the medial aspect of the talus becomes more prominent with eversion of the forefoot whereas the lateral talar dome becomes more prominent with inversion. The second technique is to draw an imaginary line from the navicular tuberosity to the medial malleolus. The middle of this imaginary line is the approximate location of the talar head. The third technique is to ask your subject to activate both the tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior tendons. The neck of the talus is located on the medial aspect of the foot between these two tendons.
