Metatarsophalangeal joints and sesamoids
Begin by dorsiflexing all of the toes at the proximal phalanges. This motion will allow you to locate the metatarsal heads from a plantar direction. Remember that once again, you can isolate an individual metatarsal head by dorsiflexing one digit at a time.
The anatomical sesamoids may be isolated plantarly by placing your index finger over the first metatarsal head and then moving your finger in a transverse direction across the metatarsal head. By doing this you will feel two raised areas separated by a depression. The two raised areas are the medial and lateral sesamoids respectively.
