Perforating peroneal artery

The perforating peroneal artery arises as an intermediary branch of the peroneal artery. It enters the anterior compartment of the leg around 5cm superior to the lateral malleolus . As it crosses the ankle joint, it anastomoses with the lateral malleolar artery and then with the lateral tarsal artery as it crosses over the dorsum of the foot. Remember that studies of normal anatomical variation have shown that this artery may become enlarged and replace the dorsalis pedis artery in some individuals.
